Steve Barney helps people through the role areas of … Clinical Counselor-Psychotherapist and Consultant-Trainer. Steve worked for seventeen years as a industrial scientist prior to getting a masters degree in pastoral counseling in the early 90’s. Steve entered graduate school for a clinical degree in 1994 and in 1997 he completed a M.A. in marriage & family therapy.

As a Clinical Counselor and Psychotherapist, Steve was in private practice in California as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in San Francisco and San Mateo from 1996-2009. From 2009 to 2014 he lived in Wheaton Illinois, being close to family while building a thriving practice in the area, before returning to the Bay Area in 2014.

Steve has extensive training and experience in Individual Therapy, Pre-Marital Counseling, Marital Therapy & Addictions treatment. 

He holds certifications from the International Association of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP) as a Certified Multiple Addictions Therapist (CMAT) and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). He was trained by Dr. Patrick Carnes, the leading researcher in sex addiction treatment. 

Being concerned about the betrayal trauma that partners experience, Steve has also completed a certification as a Certified Partner Trauma Therapist (CPTT) with IITAP.

Steve has also received training in Internal Family Systems therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing).

In addition to seeing clients in the office, Steve provides counseling via a secure video/audio platform for those clients at a distance within the states of California and Illinois.

As a Consultant-Trainer, Steve provides in-person consulting for individuals and organizations. He consults with both Ministry and Recovery leaders providing help and advice for issues such as: pastoral counseling boundaries and when to refer to a professional therapist, pastoral counseling and developing a healthy therapeutic counseling relationship, stress & burnout prevention for ministry leaders, Recovery Ministry start-up help and How the Twelve Step Principles relate to Christian thought, Effective Recovery Group leadership principles.

Steve has spoken increasingly since 2005 at local Churches, Christian Recovery Meetings, Men’s Meetings, Marriage Conferences, Leadership Training, etc.

He also has been supervising interns and training licensed therapists since 2003. He is available to consult with therapists in the areas of “Integrating Faith and Psychology”, “Treating Compulsive Habits of Food and Sex”, “Decreasing Anxiety and Stress” & “Healing from Childhood Trauma and Neglect.”
